Library Tech Description
Schedule and Salary
This is a part-time position. This position can work up to 20 hours per week. This position will be paid at an hourly rate. Rate of pay will start at minimum wage. There will be an annual performance review with possible wage adjustments.
Trial Period
There will be a ninety-day trial work period during which either party (library district or employee) can, without cause, elect to terminate the employment.
Supervision Received
Reports to and works under the direction of the Library Director. Will occasionally report to the Assistant Director when/if the Library Director is unavailable.
Position Purpose
To provide excellent, friendly, and helpful service to all library visitors/patrons. Help maintain a pleasant, welcoming, and clean appearance of the library. Manage and maintain the library’s website. Manage the library’s technology to ensure everything is operating correctly. Provide one-on-one technology training when/if needed. Manage and maintain the continual book sale. Provide and perform all circulation transactions when present.
Position Duties and Responsibilities
The Library Tech will perform these library duties and responsibilities, as well as perform all duties and responsibilities listed on the Library Staff Job Description.
Library Tech duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Examine all returned material for damages. Mend damaged items (when possible) or suggest replacement purchase to Library Director.
- Manage, organize, and maintain the library’s continual book sale. Plan and promote occasional special sales and large book sales when/if needed.
- Manage and maintain the library’s website. Ensure all information is current and up-to-date. Ensure that the website is user friendly and navigates easily. Promote services and occasional programs/events on the website.
- Perform computer maintenance on all public and staff computers.
- Ensure all computer updates occur.
- Run virus scans on all computers weekly or as needed.
- Ensure all browser history, downloads, files, personal information, etc. is erased from the public access computers weekly.
- Perform software updates and install, if/when the library acquires, new software.
- Perform computer troubleshooting on all library computers if/when needed.
- Ensure accuracy of the library’s online databases; make sure all database links are current, accurate, and still functioning. Perform database maintenance as/when needed.
- Provide one-on-one computer training to individuals/patrons as needed. Plan, organize, and lead a group technology training class if/when needed.
- Assist patrons with basic troubleshooting on personal devices if/when needed. If major trouble shooting is needed refer them to Plains Network Services. Explain to the individual/patron that library staff can only perform basic troubleshooting due to liability reasons. Refer them to the Library Director if more explanation is needed.
- Prepare in-house promotional material such as brochures, bookmarks, etc. when needed to promote library materials, services, and events.
- Design, update, and maintain the library’s bulletin board.
- Weed library materials annually, or as needed, following the libraries policies and procedures.
- Complete library inventory when needed.
- Perform any and all other duties as assigned, requested, and/or required by this job description, and the Library Director.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities for All Library Staff
All library staff will perform these general library duties and responsibilities.
- Welcome all visitors/patrons to the library and assist them in a friendly manner with all library and circulation transaction needs.
- Smile and verbally greet and make eye contact with everyone who comes into the library.
- Ask visitors/patrons how you can help them and explain how our library works.
- Be certain and clear of the visitor’s/patron’s needs – Only then can you truly help them properly.
- Practice the “visitor/patron comes first” philosophy.
- Maintain a pleasant, welcoming, and clean appearance of the library. Dust, vacuum, and wipe down all areas as needed.
- Open and close the library following proper library procedures.
- Complete library errands as needed, using personal vehicle, such as getting the library mail.
- Use the library’s integrated library system (ILS) to assist patrons in borrowing, returning, and renewing library materials, as well as processing and locating holds materials and inter-library loans (ILL).
- Assist and provide patrons, and other libraries, with ILL services by phone, email and in person. Notify appropriate patron when a requested item becomes available.
- Recommend new material for the library collection. Welcome patron recommendations as well. Document the recommendation information for further consideration.
- Use the library’s online catalog, databases, standard print, and periodical literature to assist patrons with reader’s advisory and to help patrons locate information as needed.
- Instruct/train patrons how to access and use all of the library’s online resources such as the library website, online catalog, databases, and eBook/eAudio app.
- Shelve all material alphabetically by author’s last name, item type, and special shelving location. Alphabetize author’s titles and shelve their series before their standalones when applicable. Shelve DVDs alphabetically by title. Review shelves when putting away materials to ensure they are all properly placed; re-shelve when necessary. This is a detailed task that requires consistency.
- Examine all returned material for damages. Mend damaged items (when possible) or suggest replacement to Library Director.
- Explain and inform library services and offerings to new patrons and assist them with obtaining a library card. Issue the library card and enter the information into the library’s ILS. Make updates or special notes into the patron’s account when needed.
- Assist patrons with computer use as needed, including the AWE Learning computer for children.
- Answer the telephone and determine caller’s needs. Provide basic and routine answers to questions. Refer caller to proper staff when needed. Record and deliver messages accurately.
- Receive monetary payments for services rendered. Make and count back change when required. Write receipts if requested and accurately enter the transaction into the petty cash notebook.
- Perform fax, copy, scan and email services for library patrons as needed. Also assist users on making copies from the computer if needed.
- Keep and record daily statistics accurately: computer use, copies, faxes, reference questions, etc. This information is vitally important and is used to complete annual library, state, and federal reports.
- Participate actively in promoting and marketing the library through social media (Facebook) and local newspapers. All materials being published shall be proof read by the Library Director and/or Assistant Director. Provide newspaper publications to the Library Director for record retention.
- Take time to know what’s going on in the county/community. Refer interested visitors/patrons to appropriate source for more information.
- Participate actively in providing library outreach to Kiowa County residents.
- Assist with all library programs, events, and projects as assigned, required, and/or requested.
- Multi-task effectively. Prioritize and perform duties thoroughly and follow through to completion in a timely manner.
- Be a team member and form a strong working relationship with all library staff. Show willingness to be cross-trained and assist colleagues with departmental duties if/when needed.
- Assist in training and orientation of new employees when applicable.
- Fill in for other library staff when needed and if you’re available.
- Be aware of what needs to be done and, when appropriate, do it without being asked.
- Pursue professional development opportunities by attending conferences and workshops (both online and in person) when library schedule and budget allows. Stay current with local and national library laws, trends, collaborative efforts, technology, grants, and networking opportunities that will directly benefit the library.
- Advocate for the library as an employee and as an individual.
